What to do??

I know every mother must have those weeks where nothing seems to go right. This has been one of those weeks.

Ryleigh was doing such a good job of sleeping through the night that I decided it would be a good time to move her from the cradle in our room to her crib in the nursery. The first night (last Friday) she did wonderful; sleeping all the way until 5:00 am. Saturday night she got up a few times, starting around 2:00 am. I figured she was hungry or something so I fed her and put her back to bed, only to have her wake up again a short bit later. Sunday night it started at 1:00 am. And after getting up and down almost eight times before 2:30, I finally brought her back into our room and put her in the cradle. Monday night she didn't even last until 11:00 pm.

What is going on?? Why are we suddenly reversing progress??

At first, thinking she was hungry and possibly going through a growth spurt, I thought I would try giving her a bottle of formula at night instead of breastfeeding, since formula takes longer to digest. I figured it would help her sleep better. I made her a 6-oz bottle of formula and even added a very small amount of rice cereal (as suggested by her pediatrician) and Jesse fed her the bottle as I pumped. She took that entire bottle and still cried and pulled on the bottle like she wanted more, so I fixed a second bottle of 2-oz to see if that would fill her up. Sure enough, she ate 8-oz of formula with rice cereal! Guess how much I was able to pump? 3-oz. That's it! No wonder she was hungry! If she should be getting approximately 6-oz per feeding and I'm barely making 3-oz, no wonder the girl can't sleep! So, I figured the extra food, plus the fact it takes longer to digest, plus the rice cereal would mean good sleep for Ryleigh. Nope. Has not worked all week.

Now here's the real reason. I conditioned her. Not in a good way. I conditioned her that as soon as her pacifier falls out and she fusses, I reach over and pop it back in. So now she expects me to put it back in when she wakes up and realizes it is not there...never mind the fact that I'm sleeping across the house. Honestly, I have felt more exhausted than I did when she was a newborn eating every few hours during the night, because it is a constant up-down-up-down. You never get into a deep sleep. And what's worse, Ryleigh is not getting good sleep either, so she is extra fussy and tired during the day. The combination of two tired, fussy females has almost driven Jesse to drink! (Not really, but you can imagine how fun it is for him to come home to us every night.) I have tried not giving her the pacifier as much during the day and when it falls out during her naps to simply let her "cry it out." Well, after 45 minutes of crying and then finally choking when she got so 'rowled up, I gave up and went and got her. Our 'battle of wills' has persisted all week, and frankly, she is winning. It breaks my heart too much!

I have mixed feelings about what to do. I have read that babies between 0 and 3 months suck because they have a need to suck! It is a very real reflex and necessity for them. I like the fact that she sucks a pacifier because I know I could eventually take it away (as opposed to her thumb). But in the meantime, it is miserable for me getting up and down. At the same time, I dont want to keep enabling the habit to form by popping it in her mouth every 5 minutes during the night when she is in her cradle. I originally planned to attempt the "cry it out" method this weekend, and though I know it will be 2 or 3 nights of little to no sleep, it would be worth it. But after trying this method during several naps during the day, I dont know that it will work! I dont know that she is ready to give up this reflex. I also dont want to be cruel. You should have seen the glares she gave me all week during our battles. (I took the picture and a short video to remember how horrible this week has been!)

I have done plenty of research, and of course there are answers and suggestions across the board. Every baby is different, so of course there are several methods. There is a toy called the wubbanub, which basically is a stuffed animal with a pacifier sewed to it. I think this would work, as Ryleigh does cuddle with her stuffed animals and sucks on their ears, etc. However, the pacifier that comes sewn to it is not one she will take. If I go with this idea, I will probably have to make my own version with one of her pacifiers. I also think this is a good idea because when you eventually do decide to take the pacifier away, you can remove the pacifier, but let her keep the animal and it will still provide a sense of security for her. I love the idea of just throwing a ton of pacifiers in her crib so she is able to quickly grab one and pop it back in herself, but she is just not old enough to do that yet. At least with the stuffed animal it is big enough for her to grab and hold on to.

So these are my options:

  • Attempt to let her cry it out and hope that she realizes she does not need the pacifier to sleep. Best idea for the long run...if she is ready to give it up.
  • Create my own version of the wubbanub and see if that will help soothe her when she wakes up needing her pacifier. Later, use the "multiple pacifiers" in her bed, ensuring she can find one of them.
  • Continue to let her sleep in my room and pop in the pacifier until she is a little bit older and then try one of the above methods.

I really dont know what to do. I dont have a problem with her taking a pacifier until she is a little older. I dont think there is anything wrong with babies, who have a need to suck, using one! I really want her to learn how to self-soothe when she wakes up in the night, and I know the only way to teach her that she can do it, is to let her cry. I just dont know if she is ready for that (or if I am ready for that!)

Help! All suggestions welcome.

Meet and Greet

Last Saturday my mom's friends all got together for a luncheon at an adorable tea rom. It was Mom's chance to introduce Ryleigh to all her friends. At first, I was slightly skeptical, considering I had never heard of anything like that before. But actually it was a lot of fun. Those women have all been a part of my life too, and new baby or not, it was fun to see them and catch up with their lives. Fun times!

My big girl

People were not kidding when they say that babies grow up too fast! I think Ryleigh has hit a few major milestones lately, and is becoming quite the "big girl." (Yeah right, I know, but still. Hehe :)

She finally grew too long for the infant hammock in her bath tub. She does okay sitting in her tub, but she tends to excited and ends up kicking so hard she pushes herself over. We have to watch her all the time! It is fun putting her floating toys in the bath, and though she does not exactly "play" with them yet, she does watch them very intently.
I just added this picture to show how cute she is after bath time. :)
Wearing her Old Navy outfit from 'Aunt' Michelle...and to top it off, tie-up shoes from Granddad Holder, bought for her when Mommy first found out she was expecting a baby girl.
(Yes, Ryleigh loves Old Navy as much as Mommy!)
After much raving about the Bumbo chair from family and friends, I went and got one for her, and sure enough, she seems to like it. She is not holding her head up 100% of the time yet, so I only put her in it for a little bit of the time, and only when she is awake and alert. This chair is going to come in handy over the weeks and months to come.
Tummy time on her new play mat. There is a mini boppy-type pillow to help with tummy time, but frankly nothing helps. Ryleigh is NOT a fan of tummy time!
But she does like laying on her back and looking at the rattle toys. Her arms are just out of reach for the toys right now, but give it a month, and our house will sound like a baby's playground.
So fun! :)
Just thought I would pass along these pictures so you can all share in her transitions!

Rough Daddy day

Poor Jesse. He had a rough day yesterday. It rained, so he got off work early, and since he did not have an Elfa job, he was able to come home! Naturally, he was very excited about getting to spend time with Ryleigh during her better hours of the day. Well, it ended up being rougher than expected.

First, he tried to take a nap with her and she wanted nothing to do with that. Daddy felt bad.

Then later, he was trying to help put her in her carseat and she bumped her head on the handle and started screaming. Daddy felt worse.

Finally, he was getting her ready for bath time, and filled up her tub. When he went to put her in the water, she started screaming. I went in there, and the water was a little too hot. He immediately noticed that her legs had turned red and got extremely upset thinking he had burned her (which he did NOT). Daddy officially felt terrible.

I think that was the last time he touched her yesterday, except to kiss her goodnight. Poor Daddy. He was just trying to help and be a part of Ryleigh's daily routine! :(

I forgot one!!

(Hard to believe, I know, considering my massive list in the last post!)

  • I love the priceless look on her face as she poops! (She squishes her face, purces her lips together, and her entire face turns bright red. HILARIOUS!)

Things I love

There are a lot of things to love about life with Ryleigh, many of which I know I will miss as she gets older.
  • I love the way her eyes light up when she smiles.
  • I love when she gets super excited, and she starts kicking both legs and flapping her arms all at the same time.
  • I love when she is sleeping and her pacifier falls out; I reach over to gently push it back in, and she instinctively covers my hand with both of her little hands as if she is making sure I dont leave her.
  • I love when we get up for her early morning feeding (around 5am), she is still pretty out-of-it, and typically just wants to cuddle up under my chin.
  • I love whenever she feels my hand anywhere near her hand, she starts grabbing for my fingers and will not let go. She has such a strong grip for such a little girl.
  • I love propping her up on my hip, and she will wrap her hand around the "fatty" part of my arm-- she is the only one who can get away with this!
  • I love how she watches me so intently sometimes, I can just imagine the "mental notes" she is taking in her little head.
  • I love the little 'gulping' sounds she makes as I feed her.
  • I love the way I can calm her down when no one else can. :)
  • I love when she starts 'talking' to me and actually mimics the sounds I make.
  • I love the pitiful sound of her "needing attention" cries; especially when she sticks out the pouty lip.
  • I love the overwhelmed sigh and smile she gives when you blow in her face.
  • I love how she loves her bath time and then the lotion massage afterwards- such a happy baby!
  • I love how she somehow manages to curl all the way to the top corner of her bed at night, as if the bumper against her head and her side provide extra security.
  • I love how she loves to look at light. She wakes up looking at the window, and throughout the day always manages to find the window and the light.
  • I love her long eye lashes when she is wet from the bath.
  • I love how she will smile at herself in the mirror, but when I notice, she suddenly turns "shy" and tucks her head into my chest.
  • I love how she constantly sticks out her tongue and licks everything that comes remotely close to her lips.
  • I love all her little petite features...and those long, skinny legs and toes!

I love this time with her, and I dont want to forget a single thing!

Hair Loss!

Everyone warned me about hair loss after pregnancy, and I was prepared for it. But not for the AMOUNT of hair loss! I'm not kidding people, my hair falls out in CHUNKS several times a day. Basically every time I touch it, at least 5 pieces fall out. When I wash it or brush it, hundreds fall out. I used to complain about Jersey shedding all over the house, but lately I have been as much a culprit as her!

So finally I decided to do something about it. Granted, my hair still falls out, but at least it is not as long, so somehow it doesn't look as bad. Plus my hair was starting to look extremely stringy losing all its volume. Hopefully my new "do" helps add volume that is not really there. :)

My inspiration was the Nicole Kidman picture. I liked the bangs and the way it all framed her face so nicely. I'm not sure mine turned out quite like her (really looks nothing like it actually), but I do like it. The best part was having the hour to myself, getting the shampoo while she massaged my head, and feeling "pampered" simply by getting a hair cut.
Yes, my life has officially changed.

The morning after

She did it! Ryleigh gave me a full 8 hour night...not just once, but 3 nights in a row! I woke up so thankful, I cannot even tell you. I have a whole new appreciation for sleep. Seriously.

Everyone warned me that when she finally slept all night, I would wake up in a panic wondering if anything was wrong or why I had been able to sleep all night...but no. I woke up to her cooing at the light in the window, and I just smiled. My little baby had slept!!
Thank you, Ryleigh for giving me 3 nights of rest! I hope this new trend continues. :)

Ending of an era

This weekend my dad's brother, Ron, made his final flight as a pilot for Continental. He has been flying for them for a very long time (I'm afraid to guess a number), and this weekend marked his last. To celebrate his retirement, they had a party at their ranch. We don't get to see the Holder family much, so it was a fun get-together. My cousins Carol and David came in, and I was able to meet Carol's husband and daughter, and David's girlfriend. In return, they all got to meet Jesse and Ryleigh!

Hayley's 1st birthday!

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday, dear HAYLEY,
Happy birthday to YOU!

As stated in a previous post, we went to the lakehouse this weekend to celebrate Hayley's 1st birthday. I seriously cannot believe it has already been a year since Hayley started the "baby boom." She has enriched all our lives with her curious personality and spark for laughter.

Time with friends

We went up to Austin this weekend to hang out with our friends on Lake Travis. We have been fortunate enough to have really great friends who love to get together and play! This year we went to celebrate Hayley's 1st birthday (details to follow in another post), and as usual we had an excellent time.

Here are the boys together:
Tom, Chris, Hayden, Jesse, Thomas, and Zach
The girls:
Lauren, Lindsey, Heather, Donna, Susan, Melody

Playing "couples"ping pong...I think Jesse wished he would have been married to someone else during this game!
Daddy and Ryleigh on the dock
Mommy and Ryleigh
How cute is that swimsuit?
(Thanks, Mom! aka: Grandma)

the girls entertained themselves, while we played mini softball
Each of us with our daughters:
Lauren and Hayley (1 year)
Melody and Ryleigh (2.5 months)
Heather and Avery (7 months)

It was so fun watching Hayley toddle around...Avery sure wanted to keep up, but not quite yet. Ryleigh was content to watch the action.

Hayley was very attentive to Ryleigh- well, at least attentive to Ryleigh's pacifier! I cannot wait to see these girls all grow up to be friends. :)

A great time was had by all. We were able to hang out and catch up with friends, celebrate Hayley's birthday, relax, play games, and overall have FUN! Thank you God for the blessing of friends in our life.

4 years together

Last Thursday, Jesse and I celebrated our fourth anniversary. It is hard to believe that we have been married four years already. We were so young when we got married, and so much has changed since then. I feel like we have not only grown as individuals, but also as a couple. We are much stronger now than we were back then. And as cliche' as it might sound, I know that I truly do love Jesse more now than I did the day I married him. With every new phase of life, I get introduced to a new side of him, that continues to amaze me. I'm so thankful that God brought this wonderful man into my life, and I cannot wait to experience the rest of forever with him by my side.

To celebrate, we went to dinner at Perry's Steakhouse and left Ryleigh with my mom. We both love that restaurant, and we splurged! To start, we both had Caesar salads and bread with a glass of wine. Then Jesse ordered a chicken meal and I ordered their 7-finger pork chops. For dessert we split Bananas Foster. Talk about calorie overload!! But it was worth it to go to a nice dinner, by ourselves, and celebrate four years together.
Jesse surprised me with this awesome DVD camcorder! I had been saying how much I wanted a video recorder, because my memory is so terrible I just know that I'm going to forget most of Ryleigh growing up. This camera is absolutely wonderful and will be perfect to capture special memories.

It was a happy anniversary indeed!
